High school sports roundup for Saturday, Jan. 22

Six local teams secured their spots in next weekend’s IHSA Competitive Dance State Championships at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington from Saturday’s Sycamore Sectional.

Woodstock North advanced in Class 1A, while Hampshire, Crystal lake Central and Crystal Lake South made it in Class 2A. Jacobs and Huntley earned spots in Class 3A.

The top six in each division advance to the state championships on Friday and Saturday. The top 10 in Friday’s preliminaries move on to Saturday’s finals.

Jacobs scored 88.57 to take fourth place in the 3A competition. The Golden Eagles won the Fox Valley Conference Meet on Jan. 12.

Huntley took fifth in 3A at 88.50. The Red Raiders were third in the FVC.

Hampshire scored 85.63 to take third in Class 2A at Sycamore. The Whip-Purs took sixth in the FVC with 79.15.

Crystal Lake Central (84.93) took fourth at Sycamore and Crystal Lake South (83.60) was sixth. Central was second in the FVC competition, South was fourth.

Central has five top-10 finishes at the state finals, which started in 2013.

Woodstock North scored 75.62 to take fifth in Class 1A.

In Class 3A, Dundee-Crown was 11th and McHenry was 12th. In 2A, Cary-Grove finished eighth and Prairie Ridge was ninth. Woodstock took 11th in 1A.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Burlington Central 44, South Elgin 34: At Burlington, Taylor Charles did a bit of everything for the Rockets once again with 15 points, 10 rebounds, six blocks and four assists.

Sam Origel added 13 points and Becca Carani added 11 points and eight rebounds for Central (14-7).

Huntley 54, Dundee-Crown 16: At Carpentersville, the Red Raiders locked the Chargers down completely in a dominant Fox Valley Conference win on the road.

Huntley’s defense allowed no D-C player to score more than four points in the rout, while Jessie Ozzauto and Sammi Campanelli scored 10 points apiece for the Red Raiders.

Marengo 45, Genoa-Kingston 40: At Marengo, Bella Frohling led the home team to a win over the Cogs with 19 points.

Hinckley-Big Rock 59, Alden-Hebron 35: At Hinckley, the Giants came up short on the road despite 17 points from Jessica Webber.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Marengo 71, Harvard 35: At Marengo, the home team earned a comfortable Kishwaukee River Conference win behind a 25-point performance from Matt Volkening.

Brock Adamson added 14 points in the win.

WRESTLING

Burlington Central Duals: At Burlington, McHenry swept its way through four matches to improve to 20-1 on the season, beating Johnsburg (60-9), Lake Park (58-6), Geneva (56-19) and Richmond-Burton (57-8).

Pedro Jimenez led the Warriors with wins in each of those four victories at 132 pounds and Chris Moore also went 4-0 on the day at 170 pounds.

BOYS BOWLING

Hononegah Sectional: At Viking Lanes, Huntley is headed to the state finals following a fifth-place finish at sectionals in South Beloit.

The Red Raiders had a team score of 5910 to qualify along with Harlem (1st, 6516), Belvidere North (2nd, 6147), Freeport (3rd, 6036), Hononegah (4th, 5939) and South Elgin (6th, 5880).

McHenry missed the cut by 214 pins, finishing 13th overall out of 16 teams.

BOYS SWIMMING

Mary Landa Invite: At Woodstock, McHenry, Cary-Grove and Huntley each earned wins at the Mary Landa Invite, which breaks teams down by graduating class.

McHenry’s freshmen and seniors both took first, Cary Grove took first in the combined fresh/soph scoreboard and Huntley was first among juniors and tied with Belvidere North for first in the overall cumulative standings.
