Richmond-Burton’s Savannah Webb starts 3-0 at Class 1A state tennis tournament

Richmond-Burton’s Savannah Webb earned victories in each of the first three rounds of the Class 1A Girls Tennis State Tournament on Thursday to earn a spot among the top eight singles players in the class.

Webb defeated Danville’s Brooklynn Behrens, 6-0, 6-1, in Round 1; North Shore County Day’s Kate Henry, 6-2, 6-1, in Round 2; and Sacred Heart-Griffin’s Agnes Cross, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, to advance to Friday’s quarterfinal round.

Johnsburg’s Gracie Cittadino also advanced to the second day of action with two wins and one loss. Cittadino opened with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Glenwood’s Samantha Shankland, then defeated Caitlyn Conrad of Althoff Catholic, 6-1, 6-1, in Round 2. She was then bumped down to the consolation bracket after a round three loss to Payton’s Maya Jha, 6-0, 6-2.

In doubles action, Prairie Ridge’s Aleena Ciezak and Kelsey Collins won their opening match, 5-7, 6-2, 10-6, over Rochelle’s Melissa Young and Jordin Dickey before losing, 6-0, 6-0, in Round 2 to Teutopolis’ Macy Probst and Isabelle Hemmen. The pair then bounced back with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Belvidere’s Beau and GiGi DeGennaro in the consolation bracket before being eliminated by Fenwick’s Rachel Abraham and Maeve Paris in the third consolation round.

Class 2A State Tournament: Jacobs’ Kaya Trumbo and Isha Desai are still alive in the Class 2A doubles consolation bracket after picking up three wins against one loss on the tournament’s opening day.

Trumbo and Desai opened the day with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Plainfield North’s Isabela Person and Thea Salcedo, but were bumped to the consolation bracket with a 6-1, 6-0 loss in Round 2 to New Trier’s Lucy Parrilli and Keri Rothenberg. The duo rebounded in the consolation bracket with wins over Naperville North’s Calli Genovese and Tiffany Cheng (6-3, 6-4) and Benet’s Claire Converse and Shane Delaney (6-2, 6-1).

Huntley’s Dyllan Cash and Kylie Phommasack were eliminated in two matches – an opening-round 6-1, 6-1 loss to Highland Park’s Molly Murphy and Rae Cohen and a 6-1, 6-3 consolation loss to Grant’s Eliska Rasborschek and Gianna Vavalle.

In singles action, Crystal Lake Central’s Parker Zautcke lost her opening match, 6-0, 6-1, to Lake Zurich’s Katrine Boianov, bounced back with a 6-1, 6-2 consolation win over O’Fallon’s Kelsey Dismukes and was eliminated, 6-0, 6-0, by Glenbrook South’s Jenna Horne.

Huntley’s Ruhi Gulati and Elaina Hibbeler each had a win and two losses and finished play with losses in the second consolation round. Gulati lost 6-0, 6-1 to Lake Forest’s Autumn Rabjohns, defeated Barrington’s Emily Yoon 6-2, 6-4 and lost to Lincoln-Way Central’s Kara Rimkunas 6-4, 6-4 to end the day. Hibbeler lost 6-2, 6-1 to Plainfield North’s Santoshi Yadagiri, won 6-4, 6-3 over Bradley-Bourbonnais’ Paula Perez and was eliminated by at the hands of West Chicago’s Katrina Dy.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Prairie Ridge 2, Crystal Lake Central 0: At Crystal Lake, the Wolves picked up a 31-29, 25-14 home win over the crosstown Tigers.

Haylee Yelle had seven kills and two digs in the win, Ansley Morlock had eight kills and seven digs, and Rilee Schulze added seven assists and six digs.

McKenna Timmerman had 11 kills and seven digs for Central, Molly Vittoe added seven digs, and Paige Keller doled out 20 assists.

Cary-Grove 2, Hampshire 0: At Cary, the Trojans earned a 26-24, 25-22 Fox Valley Conference win over the Whip-Purs.

Gabi Peter had nine kills, and Jacey Lambert had eight kills for the Whips (14-20, 5-13).

Jacobs 2, Dundee-Crown 0: At Algonquin, the Golden Eagles earned an FVC win, 25-23, 25-11, over the Chargers.

Audrey Prusko had four kills in the loss as D-C fell to 9-20 overall.

Marian Central 2, Richmond-Burton 1: At Woodstock, the Hurricanes notched a senior night win, 25-21, 25-27, 25-23, over the visiting Rockets.

Valle Leggett led the way with nine kills, eight digs and six aces, Jessa Passi had 12 digs and five assists and Kaitlyn Mullen added 16 assists.

Woodstock 2, Woodstock North 1: At Woodstock, the Blue Streaks came out on top over the rival Thunder, 22-25, 25-17, 25-21.

Faith Eddy had six kills and six digs for the Thunder, who fell to 25-8 overall and 8-2 in the Kishwaukee River Conference to end the regular season.
