A McHenry man died in a crash Tuesday near McHenry, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said.
The McHenry Township Fire Protection District said it was called to the intersection of Ringwood and Martin roads near McHenry at 11:14 a.m. Tuesday for a two-vehicle crash.
Crews found two SUVs at the scene, a woman trapped in one and a man trapped in the other. Two children were in the SUV with the woman, but bystanders got them out before fire crews arrived, Battalion Chief David Harwood said.
Paramedics began advanced life-support measures, and firefighters starting extricating the trapped drivers. It took 15 minutes to free both drivers, Harwood said.
Crews upgraded the call to bring more resources and a LifeNet medical helicopter to the scene, Harwood said.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, alongside the fire district and McHenry police who responded to the crash, said the man, 77, was taken to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Officials have not yet identified the man.
The woman, who the sheriff’s office said was a 32-year-old Wonder Lake resident, and the children were taken to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. The fire department said the woman was taken to the hospital with serious injuries but was stable, and the children were taken for evaluation “in good condition.”
The sheriff’s office said a 2020 Ford Explorer, driven by the Wonder Lake woman, was heading north on Ringwood Road when a 2013 Toyota Highlander, driven by the McHenry man, traveling south on Ringwood Road “entered the northbound lane and struck the Explorer head-on.”
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit continues to investigate the crash.
Ringwood Road was closed between Martin Road and Route 120 in and near McHenry after the crash, McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.
