Marquette boys hoops takes defensive battle against Seneca in 1996

January 9, 1996

The Marquette boys basketball team trailed host Seneca by five at halftime but regrouped to earn a 42-39 victory. The Crusaders were led by 17 points from Ted Hughes and 16 points and eight rebounds from John Nelson. The Fighting Irish were paced by Dan Medler [16 points] and Mike Davis [eight points, six rebounds].

In a battle of unbeaten Midstate Conference teams, Fieldcrest earned a 68-58 road triumph over Lexington to improve to 11-1 overall and 4-0 in the league. Eric Seifert led the Knights with 24 points, with Josh Halley adding 22 points, and Mike Watson 13 points and nine rebounds.

50 years ago

January 9, 1971

The Woodland boys hoops squad defeated Mazon-Verona-Kinsman 69-56. The Warriors were paced by Don Kern’s 21-point, 13-rebound double-double, with Jim Kern adding 19 points, Larry Adams 14 points, and Chuck Tombaugh 11 points.

The Marquette boys basketball team — behind 45 points from Bob Guyette — topped Toluca 70-67. The Crusaders also received 12 points from John Pocivasek.

The Sandwich boys hoops club scored 30 points in the fourth quarter in a 92-68 triumph over Lisle. Dave Edwards led the Indians with 25 points, followed by Keith Burkhart and Mike Bennett with 17 points each, Howard Doss with 14 points, and Bill Lloyd with 11 points.

70 years ago

January 9, 1951

The Ottawa boys hoops team ran past host Streator 73-48. The Pirates were led by 25 points from Jim Varland, with Bill Alleman adding 16 points, and Lloyd Gromm 13 points. The Bulldogs’ Bob Barrett had nine points and Bob Cipalo eight points.

The Somonauk boys basketball squad topped Plano 61-42 in Little Ten Conference play. Ron Anderson led the Bobcats with 19 points, while Bob Johnson and Dave Westbrook each netted 11 points.
