SYCAMORE — The Ottawa softball team pounded out 20 hits and put up crooked numbers in four of the seven innings in rolling past Sycamore 14-6 in Interstate Eight Conference play on Wednesday.
The Pirates (6-0, 2-0) were led at the plate by Abi Claus (four hits, two RBIs), Kendall Eslinger (two singles, double), Lauren Carlson (two singles, home run, two RBIs), Zoe Harris (single, double, two RBIs), Emma Haage (two home runs, four RBIs), Ryleigh Stehl (two hits), Abby Bukantis (two hits), Cassie Turk (double), and Makenna Chiaventone (two RBIs). Bukantis picked up the win in the circle after allowing just three hits, no runs, no walks, and 12 strikeouts in five innings.
Newark 8, Earlville 1: At Earlville, the Norsemen (6-0, 2-0) scored two in the first and three times in each the third and fifth innings in the Little Ten Conference win. Emily Schofield had a single and double for Newark, Peyton Wohead, and Taylor Kruser (two RBIs) each had base hits, and Danica Peshia drove in three runs. Kodi Rizzo (7 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 15 K) earned the win in the circle. Elizabeth Browder had the lone hit for Earlville (0-2, 0-2) while losing pitcher Paige Marks (4 1/3 IP, 5 H, 7 ER, 4 K) and Brooklyn Guelde (2 2/3 IP, 1 H, 7 K) share time in the circle.
Wheaton St. Francis 6, Serena 5: At Wheaton, the Huskers fell just short of defeating the Class 3A Spartans. Katie Baker had a single, home run, and two RBIs for Serena while Paisley Twait (double), Emma Holdiman, and Harlee O’Dell also collected hits. Taylor Staton (6 IP, 9 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) took the tough loss in the circle.
Kaneland 16, Sandwich 0 (5 innings): At Sandwich, the Knights exploded for 11 runs in the fifth in the Interstate Eight Conference victory. Alexis Sexton and Breanna Sexton each recorded a hit for the Indians (0-2, 0-2) while Maggie Knepper took the pitching loss.
Baseball
Ottawa 10, Rochelle 1: At Rochelle, the Pirates scored four times in the opening inning on the way to the I-8 triumph. Winning pitcher Jack Olson went the distance giving up just two hits, one walk, and striking out seven. At the plate, Ottawa (4-1, 2-0) received two hits each from Evan Evola (triple, RBI), Luke Cushing (home run, two RBIs), and Adam Weitzel (double, RBI), while Michael Bruner, Anthony Cooper, Jon Zytnowski, and Jake Serby (double) all drove in runs.
Newark 14, Earlville 2 (5 innings): At Earlville, the Norsemen used a 12-run fourth to defeat the host Red Raiders. Earlville (0-3, 0-2) received singles from Griffin Cook, Jake Pickert (RBI), and Garett Cook (RBI), while starter Noah Lemke struck out eight in three innings and Ryan Browder fanned four in a 1 1/3 of relief.
Morris 12, Sandwich 0 (5 innings): At Sandwich, Sam Palumbo had the lone hit for the Indians (0-1) in a season-opening and I-8 loss.
Newark 7, Earlville 0: On Tuesday at Newark, Dalton Reibel (7 IP, 16 K) spun a no-hitter shutout to lead the Norsemen past the Red Raiders 7-0. Luke Hauge, Jake Kruser, Jared Slivka, Lucas Pasakarnis and Joe Martin, drive home runs in the decisive fifth frame, with Martin batting 3-for-3.
Davis Sweeney (5 IP, 0 ER, 8 K) suffered the pitching loss for Earlville.
Girls Soccer
Ottawa 5, Plano 1: At King Field, the Pirates (1-2) recorded their first of the season. Morgan Stone had three goals and an assist for the hosts, Gabi Krueger had a goal and two assists, and Rylee Duncan also found the back of the net.
Girls track and field
Sycamore 84, Sandwich 43, Ottawa 40: At Sycamore on Tuesday, Sandwich’s Claire Allen broke her second school record in as many meets, following up her record discus mark with a new record of 39 feet, 5 inches in the shot put for first place.
Other Indians firsts included Allen in the discus (105′ 10-3/4″) and Claire Roberts in both the long (15′ 0-3/4″) and triple (33′ 3-1/4″) jumps.
Boys track and field
Sycamore 93, Sandwich 61, Ottawa 26: At Sycamore on Tuesday, Jayden Green (1.88 meters in high jump, 6.27 in long jump, 1.98 in high jump) won three individual events and Michael Marrs (:11.25 in 100, :22.59 in 200) won two for the Indians.
The 400 relay team of Noah Klossing, Green, Marrs and Ian Kelson (:44.32) and the 3200 team of Adrian Mendoza, Hudson Wills, Luis Baez and Jaedon Thompson (9:44.92) also claimed firsts.
