During the high school girls volleyball season, IC Catholic Prepβs Ava Falduto transforms into a different type of outstanding player.
Instead of the energetic libero in club season who already has verbally committed to Penn State as a junior, the 5-foot-7 Falduto becomes a powerful outside hitter and full-rotation standout with her almost 4-foot vertical jump.
βI play libero for 10 months of my life so these two months for high school, itβs a lot of fun and I get to play back row, too,β Falduto said. βItβs a fun all-around experience.β
The Knights have high hopes after reaching the Class 2A sectional finals last season before losing to state champion Montini. Falduto had 12 kills in the season opener and followed with a spectacular 30-kill, 20-dig performance in a three-set win over St. Francis on Sept. 6.
βItβs rare to find somebody who has her talent that is just completely selfless,β ICCP coach Nancy Kerrigan said. βEvery day in practice sheβs the hardest worker in the gym. Sheβs one of those leaders. Itβs just as important to see her teammates, her friends succeed as it is for her.β
Falduto was the starting libero as a freshman until a late-season ankle injury to a starting outside hitter changed everything. Kerriganβs best option was asking Falduto to switch positions.
βThe minute I called her toward me, her face lit up, she ran at me and [said], βYes, Iβll do it,β'β Kerrigan said.
βI knew [the question] was coming,β recalled Falduto, who gladly has continued the role. βWe have a really good libero [Alysa Lawton], too, and sheβs doing awesome. Itβs worked out really well that she gets the opportunity and I get this opportunity.β
Under the helm of first-year head coach and Mother McAuley graduate Katie Schumacher-Cawley, Penn State contacted Falduto on June 15, the first possible day to contact recruits. After considering other Big Ten Conference programs, Falduto committed three days later while in Florida playing with New Wave at the Amateur Athletic Union nationals.
βMy whole team was in the background. They got to see me commit so it was really cool,β Falduto said. βI knew [Penn State was] my first choice. It felt special there as soon as I went there.β
On Faldutoβs first club team, she was an 8-year-old on an 11-and-under team. Falduto and setter Lucy Russ attended matches of Faldutoβs older sister Kaitlyn, a 2017 ICCP graduate.
βEver since about seventh grade, I stopped playing softball and it was volleyball all the way,β Falduto said. βI think itβs the speed of the game that really gets me excited and being on the floor, running around. Itβs amazing.β
This summer, Falduto started a new braids hairstyle that is now handled by teammates Jillian Kamaryt and Kiely Kemph. Thereβs also a poster signed by all varsity and junior varsity players about their summer trip to Michigan City, Indiana, brought to every match.
βIt reminds us why we play together,β Falduto said.
Benetβs Novak back to full strength
Benet junior Ava Novak made a difficult decision during club season. The college prospect and captain for her Sports Performance 16 Elite team sat out AAU nationals to fully recover from tendinitis in her right knee.
βPersonally, I felt like I was letting the team down. You work the whole season for that one specific tournament,β Novak said. βIt was such a letdown, but I knew I wanted to ensure a stable future.β
On Aug. 27, the 6-foot-3 front-row standout helped the Redwings (6-0) win Wheaton Northβs Blue and Gold Tournament. Novak joined sophomore teammate Aniya Warren on the all-tournament team.
βLast year we were super young [with four seniors]. We just feel really comfortable already,β Novak said. βI decided to play it safe so I could be 100% again and thatβs where I am right now.β

Lyons setter Markwork reaches milestone
Lyons junior and third-year starting setter Abby Markworth found her teammates to be even more vocal Aug. 26. Markworth recorded her 1,000th career assist during the Lionsβ victory over Fenwick.
βI didnβt notice what was going on because I was in the match. When Iβd set, everyone started cheering,β Markworth said. βIt was a really good day. It was super fun because they stopped it in the middle of the match.β
Markworth was presented with two commemorative posters. She received the game ball the next day during team yoga.
βI knew I was definitely close but wasnβt really sure,β Markworth said. βIβm super happy to reach that so early in LT volleyball.β
