BEACH PARK – A North Chicago woman was charged with driving under the influence and other offenses after she struck a police car that was stopped at the scene of another DUI arrest, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
About 2 a.m. Dec. 20, a Lake County sheriff’s deputy had parked his squad car on Sheridan Road, facing south, just south of Yorkhouse Road in Beach Park. He was waiting for a tow truck to take the Honda of a driver who had been arrested for driving under the influence, according to a news release.
The passenger of the Honda was seated in the back of the squad car, waiting for a ride home once the Honda had been towed away.
The deputy noticed a Dodge Durango traveling south on Sheridan Road toward him at a high rate of speed. The Dodge was traveling in the outside lane, the same lane the squad was parked, the release stated.
The sheriff’s deputy stepped partially onto the roadway and flashed a flashlight toward the Dodge in an added attempt to get the driver’s attention as the squad’s emergency lights hadn’t. The Dodge continued south toward the squad car, the release stated.
The deputy was forced to jump off the roadway, and the driver of the Dodge, Alaya N. Solomon, 36, of the 1600 block of Sheridan Road, North Chicago, struck the rear of the squad car, according to the release. This caused the squad car to strike the Honda.
The sheriff’s deputy immediately summoned an ambulance to check on the passenger who was in the back of the squad and Solomon. Both the passenger and Solomon were uninjured, the release stated.
It was determined that Solomon was driving under the influence of alcohol and with a revoked driver’s license, according to the release. Solomon was charged with aggravated DUI, aggravated driving while license revoked, DUI, a Scott’s Law violation and other traffic violations, the release stated. She was taken to Lake County Jail.
Solomon had an initial court hearing and a Lake County judge set her bail at $100,000.
