Letter: Home for the holidays

keyboard, letter to the editor

To the Editor:

There’s no place like home for the holidays. Jail is no place to be, especially during the holidays. But that’s where some of the Jan. 6 insurrectionists find themselves – in jail awaiting trial, unable to be with their families because they can’t make bail.

Maybe they should ask the former president, the man for whom they broke the law, to establish a legal defense fund on their behalf. He’s got the money. According to the Federal Election Commission, which tracks campaign finances, former President Donald Trump has amassed a $100 million campaign war chest. Moreover, he’s not shy about spending it on himself. The FEC reports Trump’s Make America Great Again super PAC has spent nearly $8 million to pay his legal bills. And to add to his embarrassment of riches, the Republican National Committee has just cut him a check for even more money to help him pay his lawyers.

Insurrectionists unable to make bail might be justified in asking the former president for the same loyalty and support they showed him on Jan. 6.

The fact that that loyalty and support wasn’t there from the beginning should tell them a lot about the man they chose to follow.
