High school sports roundup for Friday, May 14: Kaitlyn Schofield, Newark softball rally past Ottawa Marquette

SOFTBALL

Newark 4, Ottawa Marquette 2

The Lady Norsemen scored a run in the top of the sixth and three in the top of the seventh to rally for the win. Kaitlyn Schofield struck out 12 over seven innings, and also drove in a run for Newark (11-2). Emily Schofield and Kodi Rizzo also each had a hit and an RBI.

Kaneland 7, Sandwich 0

Grace Donahue struck out two over six innings for Sandwich. Alyssa Cassie had the Indians’ lone hit.

“We are so proud of this game compared to the first time we played them that was a 16-0 loss because we held them 3-0 for the whole game until the bottom of the sixth,” Sandwich coach Mattie McGuire said. “Grace Donahue has been throwing great spins that are keeping batters off balance until we lose momentum for an inning.”

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

Sandwich 128, Yorkville 25, Newark 16

Sandwich’s Dylan Young swept the 300 hurdles (46.60) and high jump (1.72 meters) to lead Indians’ first-place finishers. Others Sandwich wins included Michael Marrs in the 100 (11.20), Noah Klossing in the 200 (24.18), Steve Aguilar in the 400 (52.83), Wyatt Miller in the 800 (2:20.88), Max Cryer in the 1,600 (5:08.38), Hudson Wills in the 3,200 (11:19.31) and Jacob Heilemeier in the 110 high hurdles (16.99).

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

Newark 79, Sandwich 58, Yorkville Christian 2

Newark event winners included Gwyneth O’Connell (13:19.11), Kiara Wesseh in the high jump (1.58 meters), 100 hurdles (16.81), 300 hurdles (53.04) and the 100 dash (13.36), Stephanie Snyder in the 800 (3:10.96), Madison Sittler in the 400 (1:16.43) and Brooklyn Hatteberg in the 200 (29.53). Sandwich’s Alana Stahl won the 1,600 (6:11.60), Claire Roberts the long jump (4.78 meters) and triple jump (9.88) and Claire Allen in the shot put (11.69 meters) and discus (38.05 meters).

BASEBALL

Plano 11, Ottawa 7

Mason Accidentale went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and three RBIs for the Reapers, who scored four runs in the third inning and five in the sixth. Kevin Serio went 2-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored and Eric Perez was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

La Salle-Peru 11, Sandwich 3

The Cavaliers broke a 1-1 tie with a six-run third inning. Seven Tornga walked twice and drove in a run for Sandwich (2-10). The Indians on Wednesday scored two runs in the top of the seventh to beat Rochelle 5-4. Sam Palumbo had two hits and three RBIs. Everett Ford struck out six over four innings.

Ottawa Marquette 9, Newark 0

Tegan Kruser, Dalton Reibel, Ethan Jeffers, and Mitchell Kruser each collected one hit to lead Norsemen.
