High school sports roundup for Monday, May 10: Michael Hilker sharp in first start, Yorkville baseball beats Minooka

BASEBALL

Yorkville 2, Minooka 1

The Foxes scored two runs in the first inning and held on to win the opener of the Southwest Prairie West series. Winning pitcher Michael Hilker threw five shutout innings in his first start, striking out six while allowing two hits and four walks. Cole Yearsley walked three times and scored a run and Owen Ross struck out two in relief for the Foxes (11-5, 4-3). Kyle Mack and Ryan Harris each had doubles.

Rochelle 6, Sandwich 4

Sam Palumbo and Romeo Tornga each had two hits, and Everett Ford drove in two runs for Sandwich (1-9), but Rochelle scored four runs in the seventh and held on for the win.

Kaneland 6, Plano 4

The Reapers (9-6, 2-4 Interstate Eight) scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth, but couldn’t quite dig out of a six-run deficit. Alex Velazquez had a single, Sean Earwood a double and Ethan Cadena a single for Plano in the sixth.

Winning pitcher Tyler Conklin struck out 13 over five innings for Kaneland.

Newark 7, Indian Creek 3

Joe Martin struck out nine over 4 1/3 innings, allowing four hits and three runs. Jared Slivka had three hits and Dalton Reibel two of Newark’s 10 hits.

SOFTBALL

Newark 12, Indian Creek 0

Kaitlyn Schofield struck out four in five one-hit innings on the mound, and drove in two runs at the plate. Peyton Wohead had three RBIs and Emily Schofield, Danica Peshia and Taylor Kruser two hits for Newark (8-2).

Morris 3, Sandwich 0

Allison Olson and Maggie Knepper each had two of the three hits for Sandwich (1-6).

GIRLS SOCCER

Oswego East 5, Plainfield East 0

Hannah Chval had two goals and Erika Smiley, Anya Gulbrandsen and Loryn Paribello each had one for the Wolves (6-0). Chloe Noon had two assists, Riley Gumm, Alex McPhee and Kailey Tyburski one each.
