COVID-19 booster shots now available at Kane Vax Hub

KANE COUNTY – Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine booster shots are now available at the Kane Vax Hub in Batavia, according to a news release from the Kane County Health Department.

The Director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, recommended boosters for a broader group of people on Sept. 24.

Those groups include:

  • People 65 years and older or residents in long-term care settings should receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least six months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series.

Those ages 18 to 64 with underlying medical conditions or due to increased risk of COVID-19 because of their workplaces or institutional settings may receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 at least six months after their Pfizer-BioNTech primary series.

Those who received Moderna or Janssen (J&J) vaccines are advised to wait for third dose approval from the CDC, the release stated.

The CDC is recommending that moderately to severely immunocompromised people, 12 years and older for Pfizer and 18 years and older for Moderna, receive a third dose at least 28 days after their primary series. This includes people who have:

  • Been receiving active cancer treatment for tumors or cancers of the blood
  • Received an organ transplant and are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
  • Received a stem cell transplant within the last two years or are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
  • Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (such as DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome)
  • Advanced or untreated HIV infection
  • Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that may suppress your immune response

Individuals should talk to their healthcare provider about their medical condition, and whether getting an additional dose is appropriate for them, the release stated.
