Suburban man killed in crash on I-88 Monday morning

A 19-year-old man from Bensenville was killed in a crash Monday morning on I-88 near Kaneville.

According to a news release from the Illinois State Police, Edwin E. Chavez, 19, was driving a 2015 black Chevrolet Impala westbound when it hit the back of a semi-truck driven by John R. Ninapayta, 58, of Chicago at 7:45 a.m. near milepost 102.

The Impala caught fire upon impact and became fully engulfed. Chavez was pronounced dead at the scene, the release stated.

The right lane of I-88 near milepost 102 was closed for several hours while police investigated the crash, but was reopened at 12:15 p.m.
