When you hear the word Graham’s in Geneva, thoughts turn immediately to chocolate and all manner of sweet treats at the original store on Third Street, but just down the block awaits Graham’s 318 Coffee House, which satisfies a different array of cravings – from specialty coffees to its newly expanded cafe offerings for breakfast and lunch.
In front is the popular patio with outdoor seating, still in use in December as people stay warm with lattes and Graham’s signature hot chocolate, available in milk, dark, white and sipping varieties. We followed the whimsically serpentine pavers to the new, set-back entrance, and stepped into the remodeled and expanded cafe set in a vintage Craftsman bungalow home. Blackboards listed the offerings at the counter of the fast-casual restaurant.

After ordering, we found a table, and checked out all the cozy seating options, ranging from the enclosed porch overlooking Third Street to a couch and leather chairs around the fireplace. Upstairs are a private events space and additional seating areas for relaxed conversation. An elevator is available.

We began our meal with an outstanding mocha that struck the perfect balance of espresso and chocolate, and nimbly sidestepped being overly sweet.

My dining companion enjoyed one of the breakfast sandwiches, the bacon, egg and cheddar, which included caramelized onions and the zing of Dijon mustard on a brioche bun.
He’s looking forward to trying the ham and brie melt, one of the luncheon sandwiches, featuring brie cheese and sliced ham, with an apricot spread, served warm on sourdough bread.

I ordered one of the day’s quiches, with a luscious spinach, sausage and Parmesan filling in a tasty, flaky crust. The sausage crumbles were subtle, and the flavors melded beautifully. It was paired with a side salad of delicious fresh greens in a tangy vinaigrette.
Food and beverages currently are served in ready-to-go packaging, with plastic cutlery provided.
The large new kitchen is home to a pastry team whose members make all sorts of tempting baked goods plus artisan doughnuts. The menu extends to soups, chili and salads. Custom cakes and pies are part of the fresh culinary repertoire.
And for a sweet treat, you’ll find fondues featuring fine chocolate from Graham’s Chocolates, and varied tidbits for dipping. House-made gelato from Graham’s is another specialty. Founded in 1987, the sweets shop is at 302 S. Third St., with a sister location in Wheaton.
From 4 to 8:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Graham’s 318 Nite Bites provides cheese or charcuterie boards, which can be paired with wine and Illinois-centric beer. Also offered are homemade pretzels, and cheese or chocolate fondue.
This holiday season and beyond, there’s lots to unwrap at Graham’s 318 Coffee House.
