3 Tips for Proper Firearm Storage

Finding the right place to store your firearms can be tricky for a variety of reasons. You want all your firearms to be stored in a safe location that’s out of sight and isn’t easily accessible to anyone but you, but at the same time, especially for a home defense weapon, it should be accessible quickly should the need arise. Here are 3 tips to consider when finding the right solution to your gun storage needs.

1. Of course, proper firearm storage is doubly important in a family household. Keeping firearms out of reach of children, in addition to proper firearm education, is of paramount importance and should be in the forefront of your storage considerations. Teaching all members of your household about proper and safe firearm handling is a great first line of defense to ensure that there are no firearm related accidents.

2. For non-home defense weapons, taking redundant measures to ensure the firearm isn’t immediately usable is a good idea. For example, storing the firearm unloaded, with the safety on, in some sort of safe or other locked storage area is a great place to start. For an additional layer of security, store your magazines and ammunition in a different locker or storage solution entirely.

3. When it comes to your self defense weapon, finding the right balance of accessibility and security is going to be something that is personal to you. The easiest solution is to simply rely on your CCW for home defense, that way the weapon is only off your person at night. If you are going to store a second firearm loaded and accessible in your room, make sure that the safety is on, and for an additional measure of security, consider storing the firearm with an empty chamber and ensure the firearm stays pointed in a safe direction. During the day, consider storing it in a locked case or hidden out of sight. Again, how many of these measures you take will depend on others in your household, and it’s always best to err on the side of caution.
