3 Tips for Traveling Out of State with Firearms

Traveling out of state with firearms can be intimidating, especially for a first timer. But if you do some research in advance, you won’t have to worry.   Here are 3 tips that will make planning your next road trip a breeze:

1. The first thing to know about interstate firearm transportation is that there is no federal regulation in regard to how or what can be transported, outside of the normal restrictions of firearms (such as National Firearms Act items). The main thing to research is the laws of the states you’ll be traveling through regarding how firearms can be transported. If you’re going through any major cities, check if they have any specific restrictions as well, as they could be different from their state’s rules.

2. If you intend to travel with your concealed carry firearm, look online to see which states honor your state’s CCW permit. Currently, there are 30 states that honor Illinois CCW permits; all of the states adjacent to Illinois are on that list. Make sure you are aware of any special restrictions in a state that honors Illinois CCW permits; some restrictions include only honoring Illinois residents’ permits or restricting the ability to carry a loaded firearm in a car.

3. Lastly, when traveling with firearms out of state, practice safe gun storage procedures whilst on the road. If you are carrying any long guns, keep them stored in a case or bag out of sight. If you are traveling with any handguns, do not keep them in an open glove box or loose on the seat next to you. Oftentimes, leaving firearms in plain sight or brandishing them can give people the wrong idea.

Although it may be confusing to keep track of all the rules and procedures, if you do your research ahead of time, traveling with your firearms can be a piece of cake. For more information about traveling with firearms and a list of the states honoring the Illinois Carry permit, please contact:
