Kitchen fire in DeKalb apartment displaces 5 residents

DeKALB - Five DeKalb residents were displaced after a kitchen fire Sunday inside an apartment on Regent Drive, according to the DeKalb Fire Department.

According to a news release from the department, crews were called to an apartment building in the 1000 block of Regent Drive in DeKalb around 12:40 p.m. Sunday.

When firefighters got to the apartment, they saw heavy smoke coming from the kitchen of one of the units. The fire was brought under control in about 15 minutes, however.

No injuries were reported in the incident, which left about $20,000 worth of damage to the building, according to the release, and displaced five residents.

The apartment was deemed uninhabitable due to fire, smoke and water damage.

No one was inside the building at the time of the fire after firefighters searched the units, the release states.

Crews remained on the scene for about an hour ventilating the area. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

First responders from the DeKalb Police Department also assisted, and the American Red Cross was called to help with the displaced residents.
