The IHSA held their Class 1, 2 and 3A finals in girls track and field Saturday, May 18, 2024 at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
It’ll be, very literally, a high-flying good time in Charleston for Daily Chronicle-area athletes who qualified for the IHSA Girls Track and Field State Championships. Eleven of the 14 qualifiers are in a jump of some kind, while the other three are in the 800 meters.
We take a look at each girls' track and field athlete from the Daily Chronicle coverage area who earned a spot in the upcoming IHSA state tournament.
Genoa-Kingston sprinter Natasha Bianchi had a day Wednesday at the Class 2A Rochelle Sectional, her first track postseason event. Sycamore’s Kaitlyn Lisafield and Layla Janisch also qualified for next week’s state meet.
Joscelyn Dieckman vaulted 3.73 meters to win, while teammate Alyssa Tumminaro also qualified in second place.The Barbs also will be sending 800 champion Korima Gonzalez and high jumpers Sydney Myles and Tawonna Keith to state.
Sterling won the Class 2A Rochelle Sectional despite not having an individual champ, Mendota and Genoa-Kingston both had individual freshman champions, Sycamore had a surprise pole vault champ and Sandwich's Sunny Weber kept up her domination.
Several area girls track teams including Sycamore, Genoa-Kingston, Dixon, Sterling, Rock Falls, Sandwich, Plano and Mendota competed Wednesday in the Class 2A Rochelle Sectional .
La Salle-Peru nosed past Kaneland, Sycamore to claim the Interstate 8 Conference girls track and field meet title on Friday at the L-P Sports Complex.
