It’s been less than two weeks since the Sycamore girls soccer team lost two key seniors in the same game.But since then Spartans not only beat Kaneland to secure a share of the Interstate 8 crown, but toppled Woodstock 2-0 in a Class 2A Kaneland Regional semifinal.
The Sycamore girls soccer team took on Woodstock in a Class 2A regional semifinal Wednesday at Kaneland High School in Maple Park.
Everything seemed lined up for Kaneland to beat Sycamore on Monday and claim an outright Interstate 8 title. But when Anya Berry connected on her high-pressure penalty kick to life the Spartans to the win and a split of the I-8 crown with the Knights.
In front of an energetic crowd, Sycamore’s Izzie Segreti scored the game’s only goal in the 10th minute as the Spartans won El Classicorn as the rivalry game is known, 1-0.
Kaneland’s offense struggled all day against the Sycamore defense in their Interstate 8 battle on Wednesday. But with less than 10 minutes less, Kyra Lilly’s free kick found Jade Schrader, who punched it home for the only goal of the game in the Knights’ 1-0 win.
