Why Oates was selected

The senior forward averaged more than 15 points a game, including a 25-point outburst in a win over Rock Falls. In an online poll, he defeated Hinckley-BIg Rock basketball player Ashleigh Wackerlin, Kaneland wrestler Cameron Phillips and Sycamore wrestler Brayden Peet.

On what clicked against Rock Falls

“I was just getting into the lane and not dribbling around. I’d make one move, put my head down and get into the lane. That’s what worked the best, I feel like.”

On the team’s mindset so far this year

“We just want to stay focused and pick up as many wins as we can. But the main goal is to put a banner up in the gym. We have to stay focused, put in the extra work, stuff like that.”

On what the team is capable of

“We can honestly do whatever we can think of. We can go as far as we want to. We can easily get past a regional, into a sectional and even past that for sure.”
