High school sports roundup for Saturday, Sep. 25

Riley Newport improved upon his personal record by a full six seconds on the way to a first-place individual finish for DeKalb at the Flyin’ Hawk Cross Country Invite in Bartlett on Saturday.

Newport finished in 14 minutes, 53.2 seconds to lead the field and spearhead the Barbs’ second place team finish. DeKalb trailed only Jacobs on the team scoreboard. The Golden Eagles scored 83, while the Barbs came in at 86.

VOLLEYBALL

Kaneland Invitational: At Maple Park, the Knights picked up two wins and one loss on day two of an eponymous invite.

They defeated Plainfield Central 25-20, 16-25, 15-11 to start the day in pool play, then bested Downers Grove 25-18, 18-25, 25-17 in the first match of bracket play to secure a spot in the championship game.

Kaneland was forced to settle for second place after a hard-fought 25-18, 15-25, 25-14 win for Metea Valley sunk its championship hopes. The Knights are 18-3 overall this season.

BOYS SOCCER

Winnebago 8, Indian Creek 1: At Shabbona, Indian Creek lost its homecoming soccer match by a sizable margin.

Saul Cardenas scored the lone goal for the Timberwolves.

BOYS GOLF

Sterling Invitational: At Emerald Hill, Kaneland shot 317 as team to take first place in the 50th Sterling Invitational.

Josh Pehl led the field and won medalist honors in an on-course playoff and Cody Ganzon finished fourth on the individual scorecard.

GIRLS TENNIS

Rochelle Invite: At Rochelle, Kaneland scored 20 points as a team to secure a first-place finish at the five-team Lady Hub Invitational.

DeKalb finished fifth with five points.
