High school sports roundup for Monday, April 19

Tessa Prellberg slammed 13 kills, JoJo Cronin delivered 23 digs, and Hinckley-Big Rock’s girls volleyball team defeated DePue, 27-25, 25-14, in the first round of the Little Ten Tournament on Monday night.

Prellberg also served two aces. Other highlights for the Royals came from Jenna VerCautren with 11 digs and Payton Barry with five kills.

The Royals will face Newark on Tuesday.

Mendota 2, Genoa-Kingston 1: At Genoa-Kingston, the fourth-seeded Cogs dropped a back-and-forth match, 25-19, 8-25, 25-20, to the No. 5 seed in quarterfinal action of the Big Northern Conference Tournament.

G-K will host Byron at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the consolation semifinals.

BASEBALL

Hononegah 5, Sycamore 4: At Sycamore, Blake Novinsky was 3 for 4 for the Spartans in their nonconference loss.

DeKalb 7, Metea Valley 6: At DeKalb, the Barbs scored two runs in the fifth to tie the score and three in the sixth when Ashton Gates hit a bases-loaded triple.

Michael Clayton lead the Barbs (2-2) at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a walk. Tucker Ikens and Jared Schultz each had two RBIs, and Jared Schultz picked up the win. Bryson Bulk earned the save when Nate Nunez picked a runner off first base to end the game.

SOFTBALL

Kaneland 9, St. Charles East 4: At Kaneland, Rose Roach went 3 for 4 for the Knights, who pounded out 12 hits.

Mackenzie Hardy (two RBIs), Olivia Stoker (two RBIs), Abby Latka (RBI) and Olivia Ortegel (two doubles, three RBIs) each had two hits. Kailey Plank added a double for Kaneland.

GIRLS SOCCER

Kaneland 4, DeKalb 2: At Kaneland, Audrey Salamon scored twice for the Knights.

Taylor Carlson and Emma Hedlund also scored for Kaneland.
