Solorio family in DePue awards scholarship

3 students receive $1,000 each

Three DePue High School students have been awarded scholarships in honor of Frank Solorio, a stalwart of the DePue Men’s Club.

Joaquin Gavina, Ana Hernandez and Mia Marquez were the recipients of $1,000 each, donated in Solorio’s name.

Solorio passed away in 2010 and his family began awarding the scholarship in 2018, having taken over a scholarship created in the mid 2000s. Originally $500, the award is now $1,000 for each of three students.

A 1973 DePue grad and member of the Men’s Club since the beginning of the organization, Solorio had many accomplishments in his life, his family said, but his wife Lynn and his children, Season, Drew and Trey were his biggest source of pride.

Gavina, the son of Joaquin and Ema Gavina plans to attend the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana to study computer engineering.

Hernandez, the daughter of Jorge and Ana Maria Hernandez will attend the University of Illinois at Chicago to major in education.

Marquez, daughter of Carlos and Jana Marquez, will attend IVCC to study nursing.
