La Moille School hopes to expand residency requirements for board members

Voters will have a say in the April 6 consolidated election

LA MOILLE – La Moille School Board is hoping to expand residency requirements in order to attract more board candidates.

The board passed a resolution recently to eliminate the township requirement for board members. This will allow voters the opportunity to decide during the upcoming April 6 consolidated election if they wish to have “at large” board members or keep the current township format the district uses.

“In the last two board of education elections, we have been unable to fill all seven seats. We are asking the residents of our district to support this change in format,” Superintendent Brent Ziegler said.

The board released a statement saying the district has had difficulty in filling board positions because of the current requirements. Currently, there can be no more than three board members from each township, which has prevented the district from having a full board.

The district has had an open board seat for nearly two years, and board members feel that an “at large” format would allow for a better opportunity to fill that seat.

A virtual public hearing will take place at 6:45 p.m. March 18 and will last about 15 minutes to answer any questions pertaining to the referendum. A link to the hearing will be posted on lamoilleschools.org. Anyone with questions is asked to call 815-638-2144.
