LaMoille-Ohio co-op dissolves after 11 years

After co-oping for 11 years for volleyball and basketball, neighbors LaMoille and Ohio are going their separate ways.

The Ohio School Board elected to dissolve the co-op with LaMoille in favor of joining forces with its neighbor to the north, Amboy, for all sports this school year. Ohio has already co-oped with Amboy for football, cross country and track.

The LaMoille-Ohio partnership had been in affect since the 2009-10 school year. This is the second time their co-op has broken up in the past 20 years.

LaMoille and Ohio will both continue to co-op with Amboy for cross country and track.

Ohio has a total of six fall sports participants with Amboy - two in football, two in cheerleading, one in cross country and one in volleyball.

LaMoille has 15 girls in volleyball this fall, including five seniors, three juniors, one sophomore and six freshmen.

In addition, LaMoille is sending eight boys to play football at Amboy, including one senior, one junior and six underclassmen, and two boys for cross country.

LaMoille-Ohio did not field a girls basketball team this spring due to lack of players. LHS Athletic Director Wanda DeLong is hopeful to have a team for the girls this year.

“I told the girls if we had eight sign up we would have a team. We have eight, but we are young,” DeLong said. “My goal is to have a JV schedule and start to build back up our program. This will keep us from participating in the conference, but I want the girls to get the chance for some high school experience before they are thrown into a varsity schedule.”

The boys’ numbers are looking good, DeLong said. While the Lions will have a young squad, they will have the experience of three seniors to lead the pack, she said.

DeLong said LaMoille hosted some summer camps for volleyball and basketball with nice participation.
