Report: Train accident victim to be released from hospital

A La Salle-Peru Township High School math teacher injured in a train accident is expected to return home to his family Friday.

Matthew Makeever, 25, of 1007 Briarcest Drive, Ottawa was found lying on the ground with what La Salle police described as “severe head injuries” at 1:45 a.m. Saturday July 20 in the 100 block of First Street, just north of the railroad tracks.

He was transported to Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru, and then he was transferred to St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Natalie Smigel, producer of “Grease” at Stage 212, said she is happy for the positive news for him and his family. Makeever had been expected to be the pianist for the upcoming production.

“Stage 212 is thrilled by the news,” Smigel said. “We are anticipating his return home.”
