Here's the COVID situation at Will County hospitals after Thanksgiving weekend

The COVID-19 cases are Will County hospitals have increased slightly in some cases and decreased in others.

Here are the numbers as of Monday, with a comparison where hospitals were last Tuesday.

Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox is caring for 109 COVID-19 positive patients today and five patients awaiting test results, according to Debra Robbins, director of marketing and community relations at Silver Cross.

Nineteen patients are in the intensive care unit and 14 are on ventilators, according to Robbins. Last Tuesday, Silver Cross had 106 COVID-positive patients, 15 patients in the intensive care unit and 11 on ventilators, according to Robbins.

AMITA Health Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet is caring for 82 COVID-19 positive inpatients and 23 people awaiting test results, according to Timothy A. Nelson, spokesman for AMITA Health.

Last Tuesday St. Joe's 81 COVID-19 positive inpatients and 51 people awaiting test results, according to Timothy A. Nelson, spokesman for AMITA Health.

AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center Bolingbrook is caring for 32 COVID-19 positive inpatients and nine people awaiting test results, Nelson also said.

Last Tuesday, Bolingbrook had 22 COVID-19 positive inpatients and 22 people awaiting test results, Nelson also said.

Edward Hospital is treating 61 inpatients with confirmed cases of COVID-19. There were no deaths of inpatients with confirmed cases of COVID-19 over the last 24 hours, according to Keith Hartenberger, system director and public relations for Edward-Elmhurst Health.

Nine inpatients with confirmed cases of COVID-19 were discharged from Edward Hospital over the last 24 hours, Hartenberger said.

Last Tuesday, Edward Hospital was treating 80 inpatients with confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Edward Hospital's sister hospital Elmhurst Hospital is treating 73 inpatients with confirmed cases of COVID-19. There were no deaths of an inpatient with a confirmed case of COVID-19 over the last 24 hours.

Eight inpatients with confirmed cases of COVID-19 were discharged from Elmhurst Hospital over the last 24 hours, Hartenberger said.

Last Tuesday, Edward Hospital's sister hospital Elmhurst Hospital was treating 73 inpatients with confirmed cases of COVID-19.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health on Monday, the South Suburban region (Will and Kankakee counties) has 19.8% of the its medical/surgical beds available and 18.9% of ICU beds, below the state's minimum threshold of 20%.

Per IDPH, there are 34 available, staffed ICU beds out of 162 total, an increase of six from Monday.

Health care consultant Jeffrey R. Softcheck said in a Nov. 19 Herald-News story that the situation becomes critical once a region reaches 10% of available beds.

Once a hospital's capacity becomes really low, hospitals may have to make critical decisions on who does and does not receive care, he said.
