To the Editor:
Victory. Joe Biden has defeated Donald Trump. The forces of righteousness have overcome a terrible darkness. Democracy has defeated fascism. We must never underestimate the significance of this electoral victory.
The worst president in our lifetime has been repudiated by an American coalition. Empathy, compassion, equality, democracy, and love won on Nov. 7, 2020. Donald Trump will be gone, but Trumpism will still be a prominent force in this country. We cannot let this American coalition fighting to preserve democracy splinter. We must remain vigilant and united in the cause of a better America.
The Democratic Party has become the people’s party once more. Progressives, liberals, moderates, conservatives, libertarians, and many more have found a home in the big tent of our party. Our nation is in peril and our divides are at a breaking point. We must take advantage of this opportunity to unite this nation.
We must push to have the DREAM Act put into law. We must push for criminal justice reform. We must push for the Equality Act for the LGBTQ+ community. We must restore the Voting Rights Act of 1965 back to its full strength so that all Americans can exercise their right to vote.
We must never forget the terrible price that we have paid to rid the world of Trump and his darkness. Over 230,000 Americans have died from COVID-19. The American experiment was pushed to the very limits and it survived.
A historic number of Americans exercised their right to vote in this election. This type of energy must be carried through in every election. We can no longer afford to let our institutions deteriorate.
I encourage all who are reading to fight back against Trumpism. Reach out to the Democratic Party of McHenry County and get involved. Help us save this county and this nation. Our work in repairing this country has only just begun. We must never give up on our dreams of creating a better America for all people.
