Police warn of counterfeit check scam targeting job seekers

DeKALB – The DeKalb Police Department is warning residents of a counterfeit check scam targeting job seekers.

Police wrote in a news release an individual receives an email from a company offering a job in the scam. After the individual fills out and returns a 1099 tax form, the company mails out a fraudulent check and then asks for a portion of the check be used for office supplies, with the remaining funds being sent back to the business via a wire transfer.

For residents to protect themselves from identify theft, police recommend to verify the company giving the offer is from somewhere the individual has applied to, verify that company giving the job offer is legitimate before sending any personal information and to end the interaction immediately if the employer insists that they wire funds.

For those who fall subject to this scam, they should file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission and reach out to the police department to file a report, police said.
