Chicago man charged with New Lenox car hijacking

A Chicago man was charged with stealing a man’s wallet, cellphone and car while he was pumping gas at the Food N Fuel in New Lenox.

Tyron Harris, 23, was indicted on charges of aggravated vehicular hijacking, armed robbery, aggravated robbery, unlawful possession of a stolen motor vehicle, unlawful use of a weapon by felon and identity theft in connection with the Aug. 16 incident.

A second suspect who was with Harris at the time of the robbery remains at large, according to New Lenox Deputy Police Chief Louis Alessandrini.

Harris already faces charges over a similar incident in Mokena.

Mokena Police Chief Steven Vaccaro said a man was pumping fuel for his car at the Gas N Wash at 8810 W. 191st St., then went into the store to purchase a few items and was approached by Harris after he left the store.

Harris displayed a firearm and told the victim to hand over his car keys, phone and wallet, Vaccaro said, then fled in the victim’s car.

Alessandrini said the victim was with his teenage son, who was in the car, at the time of the hijacking.

The indictment said Harris took the victim’s Land Rover Range Rover, cash, bank cards, cellphone and he was in possession of a Volkswagen he knew was stolen.

Harris was charged with using a First Midwest Bank card belonging to the victim.

Judge Victoria Kennison signed a warrant for Harris’ arrest on Aug. 24. The case was initially sealed as it contained information that was part of an ongoing criminal investigation.

Harris’ bond stands at $1.1 million.
