Coroner still investigating Bolingbrook man's death

The death of a Bolingbrook man who was shot by a police officer remains under investigation by the DuPage County Coroner's Office.

Joshua Marks, 42, died April 19 after an incident two days earlier at a residence in the 200 block of Karen Circle, according to Bolingbrook police reports.

Police said Marks was self-harming, acting erratically and armed with a kitchen knife and that he ignored officers' commands before an officer shot him in the abdomen. Nurses at the hospital said Marks' gunshot wound did not appear to be fatal and that his death was because of complications from preexisting kidney issues, according to police reports.

An official with the DuPage County Coroner’s Office said in response to a Freedom of Information Act request that the office has “not yet completed any reports in this matter.”

“Our investigation is still ongoing, and to the extent any reports have begun, they are incomplete,” an official said.

The incident involving Marks also is under investigation by the Will-Grundy Major Crimes Task Force.

Marks was charged with aggravated assault, unlawful use of weapons and obstructing a police officer in connection with the incident, but those charges were dropped April 20 after he died, court records show.

The complaint alleged Marks placed a Bolingbrook police officer in “reasonable apprehension of receiving a battery” by carrying a knife in his hand while in close proximity to that officer and other officers.

Officers were told Marks had made suicidal comments and had been stabbing himself with a safety pin, according to police reports.
