A McHenry County judge Friday set bond at $40,000 for a Waukegan man accused of stealing an SUV that he later crashed in Fox Lake.
Nathaniel R. Kozlowski, 30, remained at the McHenry County Jail on Friday. He would need to post $4,000 bail to secure his release, jail records show.
Documents including the police criminal complaint and bond paperwork associated with Kozlowski’s case had not yet been processed at the McHenry County Circuit Clerk’s Office on Friday morning. An attorney from the McHenry County Public Defender’s Office had been appointed to represent Kozlowski on charges including possession of a stolen vehicle, aggravated fleeing, reckless driving, driving on a revoked license and possession of a controlled substance.
McHenry County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Kozlowski on Tuesday after spotting a 2003 Lincoln Navigator that was reported stolen, according to a news release sent Thursday. Deputies saw the vehicle about 6:12 p.m. traveling north on Johnsburg Road. After learning the SUV was stolen, the deputies tried to pull over the vehicle.
The driver, later identified as Kozlowski, did not comply, according to the release. Sheriff’s deputies pursued the vehicle into Lake County, where it crashed after trying to drive down the railroad tracks from Grand Avenue in Fox Lake.
There were no injuries.
Kozlowski refused to exit the vehicle after the crash and had to be removed by sheriff’s deputies, according to the release.
After his arrest, Kozlowski told deputies he had swallowed an unknown amount of drugs, and he was taken to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital.
Kozlowski’s next court date is scheduled for Aug. 26.
