Devonte L. Williams, 25, of Granville, was picked up at 7:37 p.m. Wednesday in the 1900 block of Water Street on a La Salle County warrant for unlawful delivery of a controlled substance (cocaine), Peru police said.
The charge is a Class 1 felony carrying 4-15 years in prison. Bond is set at $1 million.
Peru police allege on a prior date Williams delivered cocaine in Peru as part of an undercover police investigation conducted by members of the Peru Police Department Special Investigations Unit (SIU). Over the past several months, the SIU has conducted an investigation targeting the delivery of various types of narcotics in the Peru area.
The La Salle County State’s Attorney’s Office and agents with the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Narcotics Team assisted SIU Detectives during the course of the Williams investigation.
“This latest arrest is part of a series of arrests and demonstrates our commitment that the distribution of illegal narcotics will not be tolerated in the city of Peru,” Peru Police Chief Doug Bernabei said. “The message to drug dealers is simple, stay away form our community or face swift and certain law enforcement action.”
