A draft presented Wednesday night to the La Salle-Peru Township High School board proposes students participate in a mix of in-person learning and remote learning this fall.
The draft was shared during the monthly board meeting. The district provided the option for people to view the meeting online, and more than 80 people were watching at one point.
This draft will be presented to the school board for final approval the week of July 27. The plan might also be revised during the school year, depending on new guidance from Illinois State Board of Education.
L-P will use the following schedule for the first quarter (nine weeks) of the school year (the second quarter schedule will be released later):
• Students with last names A through Limberg will attend in-person learning on Mondays and Wednesdays.
• The remainder of the students, starting with the last names Link through Z will attend in-person on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
• Fridays will be remote learning days for all students. Teachers and students will follow this schedule using Zoom or Google Meets.
The Monday through Thursday schedule has about 600 students per day at the school. Students will participate in remote learning when they are not at L-P for in-person learning.
The high school will allow an option for 100% remote learning for students.
Every day will end at 12:06 p.m. Grab-and-go meals will be provided at the end of each day as students exit the building.
L-P is using Edgenuity (www.edgenuity.com) as its primary curriculum this school year. Edgenuity is aligned to Illinois State Learning Standards and will provide a uniform and consistent experience across the curriculum. There will only be a limited number of classes not using Edgenuity.
No lockers will be assigned to students.
The district will buy internet hotspots and loan them to families who don’t have internet access. The district will buy the hotspots through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, also known as the CARES Act.
The L-P draft plan comes after hours of preparation, including but not limited to many meetings, as well as a staff survey (which had a 77% response rate) and a family survey (which had a 64% response rate).
In the draft, the district provided information about the health and safety protocols:
• Parents are responsible for keeping children home if they show any signs or symptoms of COVID-19, which include but are not limited to fever over 100.4 degrees, cough, shortness of breath, chills, fatigue, muscle and body aches, headache, sore throat, nausea, diarrhea, or vomiting. Students showing signs of COVID-19 during the school day will be sent to the quarantine station.
• All students will have their temperature taken upon arrival. Students who show symptoms or have a temperature over 100.4 degrees will be sent home after a parent is contacted.
• Students and staff will maintain social distance of 6 feet from one another whenever possible.
• Masks covering the nose and mouth always will be required of staff and students.
• Classrooms will be provided with hand sanitizer and equipment to clean furniture and door handles each period. Custodial staff will disinfect bathrooms every hour and at the end of each day. Fridays will be a “super-clean” day. Cleaning will include applying disinfectant using an electro-static spray.
