ST. CHARLES – St. Charles hair stylist Giana Zavala knows how important first responders are these days.

As a way to thank them for everything they do, the Montgomery resident is offering first responders a free haircut at her recently opened Beyond The Mirror hair salon in St. Charles. The salon is located at 615 S. Randall Road, Suite 3, in St. Charles.

"I have a sister who is a registered nurse and I have friends who are policemen and firemen," Zavala said. "I just want to do something nice for them."

Zavala has been a hair stylist for the past nine years. It has always been a dream of hers to open her own salon. But the COVID-19 pandemic put a wrench in her plans.

"A week into signing my lease, they shut everything down," she said.

Hair salons and barbershops across the state were given the green light to reopen on May 29. Business has been steady.

"COVID-19 has actually helped business, because for the people who haven't been able to get in with their regular stylist, they're coming to me," Zavala said.

She doesn't believe in overcharging her customers.

"Just because someone charges more doesn't mean they're actually more knowledgeable than someone who charges half the price," Zavala said.

She plans to give free haircuts to first responders for the next three months. They can call her at 630-853-8469 to make an appointment.

Her salon is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. It is closed Sundays and Mondays.
