Hansen wins Republican vote for judicial vacancy

McHenry County Judge Justin Hansen will have the chance to retain his third subcircuit judicial seat after voters selected him as their Republican candidate for the vacancy, according to unofficial election results.

Also campaigning for the seat were former McHenry County Clerk Mary McClellan and former Algonquin Village President Donald Brewer. Hansen led the evening with 44.41% of votes Tuesday. McClellan came in second with 31.78% of votes, and Brewer in third with 23.81%, unofficial results showed.

"I feel good," Hansen said Tuesday. "I‘m very proud of the campaign that we ran."

Crystal Lake attorney Jeannie Ridings will challenge Hansen in the general election. She ran uncontested as the democratic candidate for the position.

Hansen took his judicial office Feb. 8, 2018 after being appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court to fill the vacancy left by retired former Chief Judge Michael J. Sullivan. Before becoming judge, Hansen worked several years in private practice, and both as a prosecutor and public defender.

"We’re very proud of the race that we’ve run," Hansen said. "It looks like voters are responding to our message of putting integrity over politics."

Voters will have the chance to elect three circuit judges, including either Hansen or Ridings, come November. Candidates in the remaining judicial races ran uncontested in their parties during the primary election.
