Hungarian restaurant opening in March

Put a homemade touch to your dinner the next time you eat out. Legacy Restaurant, offering homemade Hungarian cuisine, will be opening at the end of March.

“The menu is eclectic, American European, with house specialties being Slovakian and Hungarian,” manager Dru Melton said.

House specialties include authentic goulash, chicken paprikash served over your choice of egg noodles, fresh spaetzle, potato pancake or mash potatoes. Fridays will be fish fry day.

“Think about the touchstone dishes that your grandmother made that maybe you don’t get much anymore because they were kind of time intensive. That’s what that’s what our house specialties will be,” Melton said.

Head chef Scott King, with 25 years of experience, will lead a kitchen staff and make all dishes from scratch.

Although Hungarian food might not be your first choice, the restaurant, owned by Al Gorcsos, has something for everyone. Legacy Restaurant also will offer comfort dishes such as burgers, chicken sandwiches, fish and chips.

Legacy Restaurant, located at 2894 Commerce Drive in Johnsburg, aims to continue the legacy of Gorcsos’ family recipes that have been shared across generations, Melton said.

“A lot of the motivation or reason for this restaurant is because it’s recipes that have been handed down from his great-grandparents and his grandparents and his parents. The legacy and the history of their food is what he’s trying to bring forth. This is food that they’ve grown up eating. It’s a touchstone, and a way to relate to their roots,” he said.

With Johnsburg having a large Eastern European descendant population, opening a Hungarian-Slovakian restaurant there was a good fit, Melton said.

With space accommodating 150 people, the restaurant will offer breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The restaurant will be BYOB.
