A School District 300 bus carrying students was rear-ended Thursday morning on Route 72 in Gilberts.

The crash occurred shortly before 11 a.m., as the bus stopped before the railroad tracks that cross Route 72 just west of Railroad Street.

The driver of a blue Ford SUV was not able to stop in time to avoid hitting the bus, but swerved and clipped the school bus on the rear driver’s side, Gilberts police Sgt. Jack Rood said.

Rood said there were no injuries in the crash and that the children on the bus were secured in five-point harnesses. Firefighter/paramedics from the Rutland-Dundee Fire Protection District, which has a station across the street from where the crash occurred, were on the scene almost immediately.

Emergency personnel could be seen waving to children through the windows of the bus, which had some visible rear-end damage.

The bus was moved off the road. However, traffic moving through the area still was backed up.

Information about any citations in connection with the crash was not immediately available.
