Crystal Lake woman charged with aggravated DUI in fatal motorcycle hit-and-run

A Crystal Lake woman was charged Tuesday morning with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol related to a hit-and-run Sept. 10. The collision left one person dead and another with serious injuries, Crystal Lake Deputy Police Chief Thomas Kotlowski said.

Carolyn Tyrrell, 53, was arrested on a warrant at her home about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday by Crystal Lake police. She also was charged with felony leaving the scene of a crash involving personal injury. When arrested last week, she was charged with failure to report an accident involving a death, according to police and court records.

Police said Tyrrell consented to providing samples for toxicology testing and a breath test the night of the accident. Kotlowski said her blood alcohol content was .111 over the legal limit of .08.

Tyrrell is accused of hitting a motorcycle driven by George Klinger, 53, who was riding with a female passenger about 7:37 p.m. at Virginia Road and Berkshire Drive. Klinger was taken to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Neither of the motorcycle riders was wearing a helmet.

The female passenger was flown by Flight for Life to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. Her condition Tuesday was unknown.

Police said they found Tyrrell’s bumper with the license plate still attached near the crash scene, leading them to her arrest last week.

On Tuesday, Tyrrell posted $4,000 of a $40,000 bond and was released from the Crystal Lake Police station about 9 a.m.

She is due in the McHenry County courthouse on Oct. 15.
