Woman arrested for spitting on ER nurses, police say

Suspect was allegedly intoxicated, wanted to leave hospital, police said

A Crest Hill woman was arrested and jailed after she spat on several nurses Tuesday at a Joliet hospital, police said.

Shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday, officers went to Amita Health Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet after receiving a report of a patient “out of control,” who spat on several nurses, Joliet police Sgt. Christopher Botzum said.

Gaston was in the emergency room for intoxication when she became upset and wanted to leave, Botzum said.

Because of Gaston’s condition, emergency room staff said she “couldn’t leave until she was treated,” he said.

“Gaston became upset and at one point spit on several nurses,” he said.

Botzum said Gaston was placed on a police hold until she was medically cleared from the hospital. Officers then took her into custody about 12:15 a.m. Wednesday and brought her to the Joliet Police Department, he said.

Gaston was later taken to the Will County jail on felony aggravated battery to a nurse charges.

A Will County judge set Gaston’s bond at $7,000. She will need to post $700 to be released.

The judge ordered her to have no contact with two people and to “maintain absolute sobriety,” according to court records.
