Baseball: Andrew Jimenez, St. Charles North stay red-hot in the cold, win 11th straight

Jimenez strikes out four over four innings in North Stars' 8-3 win

GLENDALE HEIGHTS – The frigid temperatures don't seem to faze St. Charles North pitcher Andrew Jimenez on the mound.

"I've just got to be mentally prepared before I go into the game," Jimenez said following the North Stars 8-3 victory over Batavia on Tuesday, their 11th straight win.

"Before going in, I make sure I'm real warm. I just go out and compete every time I'm out there," he continued.

Jimenez lasted four innings, surrendering just three hits and struck out four. Batavia second baseman Cole Nelson had two of those hits, an RBI single and a triple. Adam Bendoraitis had the other, a single in the fourth inning.

North Stars reliever Johnny Lambert had two strikeouts in relief.

Jimenez worked out of a jam in the fourth inning, striking out Quinn Urwiler with runners on second and third to end Batavia's best multiple run-scoring threat.

"He's one of the hardest-working kids we have," St. Charles North coach Todd Genke said on Jimenez.

"He works at his craft," Genke continued. "As a position player and a pitcher, you've got to put in the time to do both. Obviously, he hits as well. He's got a lot of stuff to focus on, but he comes ready to play every day; works his tail off. He's far more mature than a [typical] sophomore."

Jimenez is in his first year on varsity as a pitcher, his specialty a curveball that has become his go-to pitch for a strikeout. Jimenez also features a fastball and changeup for his three-pitch arsenal.

"When he throws strikes he's very effective," Genke said. "He's a competitor, and we got up early and you just need strike-throwing at that point. [We've] got really good defense behind him, had tough conditions to hit so I thought he did a really nice job on the mound."

St. Charles North (20-6, 15-1) tagged Batavia starter Drew Iutzwig for six runs on eight hits over six innings. Pat Bellock singled in a run in the first inning and Ryan Thiesse added a sacrifice fly to put the North Stars up a pair of runs.

Batavia (15-9, 9-6) got a run back on Nelson's single, but struggled to bring runners in all evening. Marko Yager had an RBI groundout in the third inning, and later swatted an RBI single in the seventh for the third and final run.

North Stars infielder Egon Hein pounded a two-run single in the second inning and Nick DeMarco added a bases loaded RBI sacrifice fly two batters later. Thiesse later added an RBI single in the fourth to make it 6-2 North Stars. Jimenez hit a seventh inning RBI single, and a wild pitch brought across the final run for the North Stars.

"Drew battled to give us a chance there," Batavia coach Alex Beckmann said. "Not his best stuff, obviously, but this is baseball. They were better than us today."

"[They] squared him up early," Beckmann continued. "He kind of settled down but by that point, it's tough to come back down five [runs]."
