Zettler, LaMarca and incumbents win in D-300 school board race

Nancy Zettler, who ran for state Senate in November, was the front runner in a five-way race for four open seats on the Algonquin-based Community School District 300 school board, according to unofficial election results Tuesday.

Zettler received 2,877 votes between McHenry and Kane counties.

Zettler said in an election questionnaire she would like to see the strengthening of STEM programs and better rules and programs for bullying and cellphone use in classrooms.

She also said she would like to see schools being properly funded while lessening the burden on property taxpayers, which can be done by removing incentives and subsidies such as tax increment financing, which diverts funding away from schools.

School board secretary Steve Fiorentino came in with the second highest number of votes with 2,745.

According to his election questionnaire to the Northwest Herald, Fiorentino said some of the changes he would like to make to the district include offering additional AP programs earlier than high school and expanding dual language opportunities at early grade levels.

The remaining three candidates were separated by 50 votes, unofficial results show.

Leslie LaMarca, who previously ran for school board, received 2,650 votes. District 300 school board member Joe Stevens received 2,615 votes and school board member Kimberly Garcia received 2,600 votes.
