The girls track season is set to go outdoors, as teams begin their quest toward the state finals in Charleston. Here is a preview of area teams:
BENET REDWINGS
Head coach: Scott Brooks.
Returning 2018 3A state competitors: Senior Catherine Meehan (pole vault) and sophomores Meaghan Andrews (3,200 relay) and Elisabeth Camic (3,200 relay).
Others to watch: Senior Mia Nolan and sophomores Joy Jackson and Emily Spellman.
Outlook: Andrews and Camic return from the 11th-place state 3,200 relay (9:29.24). They and fellow sophomores Jackson and Spellman are showing potential for state qualifying over all four distance events after helping the cross country team reach 3A state the past two seasons. Meehan has started strong after tying for 29th at state (9-6) following her personal-best 10-3 at sectionals. Nolan just missed state in 2018 with a third-place, personal-best 59.64 in the 400 at sectionals. Benet seeks its 12th East Suburban Catholic outdoor title in the past 13 seasons.
DOWNERS GROVE NORTH TROJANS

Returning 2018 3A state competitors: Seniors Kim Brent (100, 400, 200) and Brooke Peters (400 relay, 800 relay) and sophomores Mia Bowers (800 relay) and Kenna Cinotte (400 relay, 800 relay)
Others to watch: Seniors Maggie Miller, Phoebe Covey, Skylar Meents and Lindsay Pluister, juniors Eva Bednard, Celeste Bonga, Carolyn-Paige Breit, Lauren Lucina and Torie Miller, sophomores Katie Figliomeni, Melissa Jachim and Lillian Johnson and freshman Eleanor Harris.
Outlook: Olivet Nazarene recruit Brent leads a strong sprint group that returns most of last year's state 400 relay (48.44, tied for 10th) and entire 800 relay (1:44.26, 16th). Brent was 12th at state in the 400 (58.33), 15th in the 200 (25.43) and 23rd in the 100 (12.73). Brent, Cinotte, Bowers and Bonga won the 800 relay at the indoor West Suburban Silver Meet and their fifth-place 1:46.98 at the Illinois Top Times Indoor Championships Saturday was .08 from the indoor school record. Breit improved her indoor school record pole vault to 10-3 March 2 and cleared an all-time school-record 10-6 last spring. Bednard, Figliomeni and Jachim helped the Trojans' cross country team earn their first 3A state berth since 2015.
DOWNERS GROVE SOUTH MUSTANGS
Head coach: Nicole Sanders.
Returning 2018 3A state competitors: Senior Becky Versaskas (3,200 relay) and juniors Erin Reidy (3,200 relay, 1,600) and Brenna Cohoon (3,200)
Others to watch: Seniors Olivia Duax, Lauryn Hodge, Alicia Macas, Clarice Maes and Melissa Weidner, juniors Ayshia Johnson, Maddie Puccillo and Kennedy Warden, sophomore Rebecca Diddia and freshman Kaylen Jackson
Outlook: The Mustangs are riding high from their record-filled indoor season, 16th straight West Suburban Conference Gold indoor title and first team state trophy in cross country. The 3,200 relay with Versaskas, a Missouri Science and Technology recruit, and Reidy was third at state (9:17.20), and they joined Campbell commit Duax and Cohoon for an indoor school-record 9:20.49 March 4. Cohoon was an all-state seventh (3,200 in 10:49.59) and ran an indoor school-record 10:51.67 March 8 following her all-state eighth in cross country. Reidy achieved indoor school records for the 1,600 (4:58.42 March 8) and 800 (2:11.47 Feb. 28). Indoor Gold winners were Weidner (3,200 in 11:13.53) and Reidy (1,600 in 5:11.87) with meet records, Versaskas (800), Johnson (long jump), Puccillo (55 hurdles) and all three relays. Hodge (Olivet Nazarene) and Maes (Aquinas) set the tone for the sprinters.
HINSDALE CENTRAL RED DEVILS
Head coach: Pat Richards.
Returning 2018 3A state competitors: Seniors Bella Pisani (3,200 relay, 1,600 relay), Kayla Byrne (3,200 relay), Gillian Filer (1,600 relay) and Ellie Geier (400 relay, 1,600 relay) and juniors Dior Nicholson (discus, shot put) and McKenna Revord (3,200, 3,200 relay)
Others to watch: Seniors Madison Boshardt, Melanie Chafin, Dina Esposito, Greta Garber, Francesca Grande and Taylor Marquez and juniors Taylor Wagner and Emma Watcke
Outlook: College-bound runners Byrne (Northwestern) and Pisani (South Carolina) return from last year's state championship 3,200 relay (school-record 9:03.41, No. 3 in IHSA history) after Revord ran prelims. Byrne also was part of the relay's 2016 championship lineup and Pisani and Revord the second-place 2017 group. Nicholson became the Red Devils' first all-stater in discus with a ninth-place 128-9 and Revord was an all-state ninth in the 3,200 (10:53.09). Pisani, Filer (Nebraska) and Geier (Dartmouth soccer) return from the near state-finalist 1,600 relay (12th, 3:59.58). Recent transfer Watcke is a distance standout who won 1,600, 3,200 relay and cross country state championships in Ohio's smallest-schools class.
HINSDALE SOUTH HORNETS
Head coach: Nick Chavarria.
Athletes to watch: Seniors Andrea Stirling, Shay Aver and Ugonna Nwakudu, juniors Nautica Kindred, Tia Miller, Patrice Trzupek and Janae Washington, sophomore Ciniya McCray and freshman Jasmine Hobbs
Outlook: The Hornets graduated two individual state qualifiers. Stirling, the Hornets' top returning sectional finisher (10th in 100), was second in the 55 and third in the 200 at the indoor West Suburban Gold Meet and third in the 100 at the 2018 outdoor Gold Meet. The 800 relay also was second indoors, and Nwakudu (triple jump), Kindred (55) and Miller (55 hurdles) third for the fourth-place Hornets.
WESTMONT SENTINELS
Head coach: Steve Wolf.
Returning state qualifier: Junior Morgan Fukar (high jump)
Others to watch: Senior Frankie Fabry, junior Ashley Valtman, sophomore Megan Thompson and freshman Lizzy Szynal
Outlook: The Sentinels have good numbers with 28 athletes, including 14 sophomores and nine freshmen. Fukar, who tied for 22nd at state in the high jump (4-11), missed the indoor season recovering from a torn ACL but Wolf remains optimistic she'll return outdoors. Fukar's talent also would boost a strong sprint group that includes Fabry, Valtman and Thompson. Szynal was the sectional-qualifying cross country team's No. 1 runner.
