When Jermal Bradley’s son was very young, “he had a hard time going to the barber,” Bradley said.
“So I learned how to cut his hair,” Bradley said. “That led me to cut my family and friends’ hair.”
Bradley eventually went to barber college. Several years ago, he started Born 2 Cut along with Malcolm Johnson and Derrick Noelm, according to the Born 2 Cut website.
Bradley is just 26 and has set a goal of making $100,000 this year. His clients are men and women of all ages, starting from about 3 years old through adult.
He said Born 2 Cut offers a variety of services to his clients and products for other barbers, in addition to the hair cuts.
Products include shampoo, conditioner, shaving gel, beard oil, style sheets, razors, shears and razors set, and T-shirts.
In fact, the Born 2 Cut website said Bradley and his founders started the business with the idea of “delivering top quality products for clients at the best price.” And if people need any help in using them, Born 2 Cut staff are happy to explain, Bradley said.
Of all the services Bradley offers, his favorite is hair replacements.
“I serve a lot of balding clients or clients suffering from alopecia,” Bradley said. “To see a person with no hair leave my shop with a full head of hair gives them a new type of confidence. It kind of makes my day.”
Bradley said his hair replacements differ from toupees in that, once placed, the replacement lasts for about a month. The process, for Bradley, meant learning how to lay out special “hair units for the head.”
“It’s the most natural thing on the market,” Bradley said. “It’s not like a toupee. This lasts over a month.”
Bradley said clients also like airbrush enhancement coloring for hair and beards, but he also offers a product for people who can’t get to his shop on a regular basis or for people who like to control the process themselves: A cordless airbrush machine that does the job using a semi-permanent dye. The unit comes with one free dye, according to the website.
“You can buy it and use it at home,” Bradley said. “You can enhance the color of your hair and beard in the privacy of your own home.”
Bradley also keeps up with styles, trends and “learning different color techniques to serve the client,” he said.
“I’m continuing adding to my skills,” Bradley said. “I think a lot of people aren’t used to it in a barber shop.”
