Wonder Lake man drew swastika, wrote 'white power' on car, police say

A 37-year-old man remained at the McHenry County Jail on Tuesday afternoon after police said he wrote “white power” and other racially charged messages on another man’s car.

Adam J. Taylor, of the 3800 block of Crabapple Lane, Wonder Lake, is charged with a hate crime and criminal defacement of property in connection with the vandalism that took place
Aug. 24 in the parking lot of M Supper Club, 394 W. Virginia St., Crystal Lake, according to a criminal complaint.

Taylor is accused of writing “white power” and drawing a swastika on the driver’s sideview mirrors, according to the complaint.

He also allegedly wrote a racial slur on the driver’s-side window of the vehicle.

The alleged victim was known to Taylor, and no other vehicles were defaced, Crystal Lake Deputy Police Chief Thomas Kotlowski said Tuesday.

Representatives from the McHenry County Assistant State’s Attorney’s Office could not be reached for comment on the incident.

Taylor’s bond is set at $25,000, meaning he would need to post $2,500 bail to be released. If convicted of a hate crime, he could be sentenced to as many as three years in prison.

Taylor is due for a bond hearing Wednesday morning in McHenry County court.
