High school sports roundup for Thursday, Sept. 20

Cary-Grove edged defending Fox Valley Conference girls tennis champion Jacobs, 4-3, in an FVC dual meet Thursday in Cary. Before Thursday, Jacobs had lost only one FVC dual in the previous four seasons.

C-G’s Bethany Marshall defeated Jacobs’ Lindsay Cunningham, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 1 singles. C-G’s Kaitlin Warner beat Brianna Japkowski, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 singles.

In doubles, Julia Pietrzyk and Jenna Briggs won at No. 3 doubles in a three-set match. Olivia Schladt and Grace O’Malley won at No. 4 doubles.

For Jacobs, Lindsey Taylor beat C-G’s Ava Warner, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, at No. 3 singles. Ramya Nissankula and Rebecca Mudge defeated Karina Los and Alina Krembuszewski at No. 1 doubles, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. Kaya Trumbo and Isha Desai won at No. 2 doubles in two sets.

Crystal Lake South 7, McHenry 0: At Crystal Lake, the Gators swept McHenry in FVC play, with singles wins from Skylar Olsen, Lizzy Sudbrook and Abby Enck.

Hannah Schuetzle and Sarah Schuetzle won at No. 1 doubles. Anna Chang and Evelyn Smith won at No. 2 doubles. Katie Rokusek and Tenille Redd won at No. 3 doubles. Dhruvi Mehta and Mallory Ellers won at No. 4 doubles for South (4-4, 2-3 FVC).

Huntley 7, Hampshire 0: At Hampshire, Ruhi Gulati, Carina Bowman and Annika Burmeister won singles matches for Huntley (17-5, 5-1) in an FVC sweep.

Riley Conradt and Michelle Barnvos won at No. 1 doubles. Meghan Fenske and Gabbi Barnvos won at No. 2 doubles. Kylie Phommasack and Gabby Kosowski won at No. 3 doubles, and Raegan Hilbrant and Hannah Hyslop won at No. 4 doubles.

Crystal Lake Central 7, Dundee-Crown 0: At Crystal Lake, Giselle Lemke, Ellie McGinnis and Julia Fier all won singles matches for the Tigers (10-3, 5-0) in an FVC dual win.

Kyleigh Kessler and Kenna Kessler won at No. 1 doubles. Katie Haviland and Cassie Preshlock won at No. 2 doubles. Morgann Paaske and Emma Grindstaff won at No. 3 doubles. Delaney Jenkins and Hannah Pipitone won at No. 4 doubles.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Woodstock 2, Harvard 0: At Harvard, Maddie Moan led the Blue Streaks (14-8-1, 3-2) with seven kills, three aces and one block in a 25-10, 25-9 Kishwaukee River Conference victory. Hanna Berry added six kills and Sophie Wicker had 22 assists.

Desiree Brady led Harvard (1-19, 0-5) with seven digs. Kylee Briggs had five assists.

Huntley 2, Dundee-Crown 0: At Carpentersville, Taylor Jakubowski had 25 assists and 16 digs as the Red Raiders (9-2, 7-2) defeated the Chargers (2-14, 0-9) in their FVC match, 25-4, 25-17.

Emma Konie had eight kills, eight digs and one serving ace for the Raiders. Loren Alberts have five kills and three blocks. Julia Johnson added five kills and Josie Schmitendorf had 18 service points.

Jenna Brown and Olivia Miller each had three kills for D-C. Brown had eight assists and four digs and Natalie Smiech had seven digs.

Crystal Lake Central 2, Jacobs 0: At Crystal Lake, Maddy McCormick had 10 kills and three aces as the Tigers (17-2, 8-1) defeated the Golden Eagles (5-9, 4-5) in their FVC match, 25-11, 25-12.

Madde Blake had 13 digs and Madeline Timmerman and Paige Hulata each had four kills and three blocks. Camryn Hausler had 14 assists and four blocks.

Maggie Wallenberger led the Eagles with five kill,s and Tai Ramirez had three. Rachel Kaczorow had 11 assists.

Prairie Ridge 2, Crystal Lake South 0: At Crystal Lake, Sammi Lockwood had seven kills and two blocks as the Wolves (15-2, 9-0) won their FVC match over the Gators, 25-15, 25-10.

Jayden Otto had 22 assists, two kills and two aces for the Wolves. Trinity Sheridan had seven kills and Olivia Jost had 10 digs.

Hampshire 2, McHenry 1: At McHenry, Riley Seagren and Madisyn Reinke each had seven kills and one ace as the Whip-Purs (11-7-1, 5-5) defeated the Warriors in their FVC match, 25-18, 22-25, 25-14.

Kayla Cooper had three kills and three blocks for the Whips, and Samanatha Rossetti had three kills and 15 assists.

BOYS SOCCER

Prairie Ridge 3, McHenry 2: At McHenry, the Wolves picked up their first FVC victory. Lucas Reitz, Noah Smeja and Max Kauffman scored goals. Owen Erickson and John Walls recorded assists for the Wolves (3-6, 1-3).

Alex Fiorita and Jason Mendez scored goals for McHenry (5-4-5, 2-2). Austin Lichtenstein made six saves, while teammate Logan Freid made two.

Crystal Lake South 3, Huntley 0: At Crystal Lake, Alex Canfield scored twice for the Gators (11-2-1, 3-0) in an FVC win. Nick Langdon had a goal and an assist.

Andrew Edge and Jacob Bimbi also recorded assists. Matt McCaleb made two saves for South. Huntley fell to 1-11 and 0-4 in the FVC.

Dundee-Crown 1, Cary-Grove 0: At Carpentersville, the Chargers (12-2-1, 3-0) remained unbeaten in FVC play with a win over the Trojans (2-4-3, 1-2).

Calvin Carlos scored off an assist by Roland Dearborn in the 12th minute for the game's only goal. Chargers goalkeeper Damian Smiech had three saves.

Johnsburg 2, Richmond-Burton 0: At Richmond, Michael Grunder and Nathan Grunder each scored for the Skyhawks in their KRC win over the Rockets.

Johnsburg (2-7-2, 2-5-2) got a goal from Michael Grunder on a penalty kick in the first half. M.J. Alvarez assisted on Nathan Grunder’s second-half goal. Ryan Roos made 14 saves for the Skyhawks.

Marengo 0, Woodstock North 0: At Marengo, the Indians and Thunder battled to a draw in their KRC game.

Goalkeeper Tyler Kanaly made 18 saves for Marengo (6-8-1, 2-6-1).

Hampshire 3, Crystal Lake Central 0: At Crystal Lake, Jack Fairwood, Sawyer Shores and Jesus Marquez scored for the Whip-Purs in their FVC win over the Tigers.

Hampshire (7-2-2) got 12 saves from goalkeeper Andrew Krajecki in the shutout.

Wednesday's late result

Carmel 5, Marian Central 1: At Mundelein, Jonathan DePrey scored Marian's only goal, assisted by Nicolas Iafigliola, in an East Suburban Catholic Conference loss. Goalkeeper Caleb Taylor made 16 saves for the Hurricanes (1-11-1, 0-4-1).

GIRLS GOLF

Crystal Lake Central co-op 161, Burlington Central 162: At Sycamore Park District Golf Course, Molly Lyne and Renata Petersen tied atop the leaderboard, each with a 37. Kathryn Bevill (40) and Arden Podpora (47) also scored for the Central co-op in a one-stroke, nonconference victory.

Hampshire 192, St. Edward 281: At Wing Park in Elgin, Gianna Farinella (42) led Hampshire to a nonconference win. Delaney Marcuccilli (46), Grace Fuller (49), Sydney Marchewka (55) and Jessie Dumoulin (55) rounded out the scoring for the Whips (7-4).

McHenry 196, Grant 285: At Boone Creek in Bull Valley, Sarah Fergus shot a 45, and Jocelyn Coyne added a 49 as the Warriors won their nonconference dual.

Kelly Morrison shot a 48 and Carly Wolf had a 54 for the Warriors.

Burlington Central 162, Marian Central 172: At Sycamore Park District Golf Course, Lauren McNulty's 40 led the Hurricanes. Danielle Lattanzio (42), Meghan Frank (45) and Ava Notaro (45) also scored for Marian.

BOYS GOLF

McHenry 178, Woodstock North co-op 180: At McHenry Country Club, Evan Bridges shot a 2-over-par 38 to lead the Blue Streaks in their nonconference loss to the Warriors.

Jordan Vargas led the Warriors with a 41. Truman Keppy (43), Ryan Peters (45) and Spencer Rudd (49) had McHenry's other counting scores.

Jack Cunningham shot a 46 for the North co-op, while Kenna Miles, K.J. Norgard and Tanner Hughes all had 48s.

Huntley 166, Dundee-Crown 169: At Pinecrest in Huntley, Garrett Heinke fired a 36 to lead the Red Raiders to a narrow FVC victory over the Chargers.

Jack Wagner (39), Danny Sheedy (42) and Michale Runsy and Jacob Burnquist (both 49s) rounded out Huntley’s scoring.

Matt McQuillen led D-C with a 37, followed by Jake Zirlin (41), Alex Matsas (43) and Jaxon Field (48).

Hampshire 158, Marian Central 164: At Randall Oaks in West Dundee, Craig Bracke shot a 37 and Justin Herrmann a 39 as the Whip-Purs defeated the Hurricanes in their nonconference dual match.

Aaron Staszewski and Mark Spitzer shot 41s for Hampshire.

Andrew Lydon shot a 38 and Quinton Urban a 39 to lead Marian. Colin Raclawski had a 42 and Bennett Arza a 45 for the Hurricanes.

Oregon 179, Harvard 219: At Silver Ridge in Oregon, James Crout (52) led Harvard in a nonconference loss. Hunter Gratz (53), Jake Chupich (57) and Ray Gerhardt (57) rounded out the scoring.
