Air, car show to feature 100 years of history in St. Charles

Model Ts, WWI bi-planes among several attractions

ST. CHARLES – Wings and Wheels, Festival of Flight Air and Car Show will be held from 9 a.m. to dusk on Sept. 8 at 3821 Karl Madsen Drive, St Charles, the organization announced in a news release.

As the Fox Valley Aero Club is celebrating 100 years of automotive and aviation history, attendees will see examples of both antique cars and radio controlled model airplanes.

The cost is $5 for adults, children 12 and younger are free. Some grandstand seating is available but attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs. Concessions will be available for purchase. For additional information, visit foxvalleyaero.com.

“This is a real opportunity for families to visit and view 100 years of aviation and automotive history all in one place on one day,” Fox Valley Aero Club President Dale Gathman stated in the release. “We will have over 20 Model T-era cars as well as over 100 remote control model airplanes.”

From Foamies to Fighters, from 3D Stunt Planes to 3D Aerobatic Helicopters, attendees can view local remote control pilots demonstrating their flight skills, the release stated.

The noon air show will start with a 1918 era Model T Ford and a WWI era remote control bi-plane from 1918 and progress through aviation and remote control history.

Demonstrations will be set to music for extreme 3D planes and 3D helicopters, as the planes hang in the air inches from the ground and the helicopters almost mow the grass while inverted.

A candy drop for the kids will follow the noon air show featuring a giant scale remote control plane that will drop candy over the enclosed airfield, the release stated.

Also at the noon show will be a mock fight between the Red Barron of Germany and the Peanuts character, Snoopy.

Both will emerge from Model Ts and then remote control replicas of the 1918 the Sopwith Camel WWI bi-plane, which shot down the Red Barron in his Fokker Dr.1 tri-plane.

Snoopy will be in the Sopwith Camel with a long scarf while Manfred von Richtofen – the Red Barron – will wear a German hat while in the Fokker. The Red Barron was shot down April 21, 1918, the release stated.

Spectators will also see an early dawn patrol of World War I biplanes, a squadron of World War II fighters and a variety of stunt planes filling the sky with smoke trails.
