Lockport Police Chief Terry Lemming received the ISBA Law Enforcement Award from the Illinois State Bar Association on June 6 during a Lockport City Council meeting.

The ISBA Law Enforcement Award was created to recognize sworn law enforcement officers for conduct that promotes justice and to distinguish those individuals whose service to the public brings honor and respect to the entire criminal justice system. It recognizes those who excel in law enforcement.

Lemming, who was nominated for the award by ISBA Board Member Sonni Choi Williams, will be acknowledged for co-creating Lockport Love, a nonprofit organization that raises money for families in need.

Lockport Love hosts fundraisers to bring the community together and raises money for people struggling to cover basic needs. Every year, a committee reviews a list of families in need from local schools, churches and other community organizations.

The committee selects families most in need of assistance, which are often those who face financial setbacks due to sudden medical issues.

In addition to his work with Lockport Love, Lemming implemented a Safe Passage program at the Lockport Police Department for heroin addicts who voluntarily come to the station seeking help.
