JOLIET – Joliet police have made their fifth and sixth arrests in connection with a Tuesday night shootout that ended with an injured 2-year-old boy.
Leonardo Ornelas, 21, of the 1500 block of Elgin Avenue in Joliet, was booked about 10:55 p.m. Wednesday into the Will County jail, according to the online jail log.
His alleged accomplice, 18-year-old Julian Guerra of the 500 block of East Division Street in Lockport, was taken into custody shortly before 3 p.m. Thursday, according to jail records.
Ornelas has been charged with attempted murder, and he faces a variety of aggravated firearm charges, including not possessing a firearm owner’s identification card.
Guerra has been charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated battery with a firearm.
A warrant was issued for Ornelas’ and Guerra’s arrest Wednesday after the two fired several rounds at Vanessa N. Casillas, 21, and Roberto I. Ortiz, 21, on Tuesday night while they stood in the driveway of a home on Landau Avenue in Joliet, police said.
Ortiz reportedly shot back at the pair. He faces charges for not possessing a valid FOID card and aggravated discharge of a firearm, among others. Casillas, the mother of Ortiz’s son, was charged with obstructing justice after she told police she had fired the gun. Casillas has a FOID card.
The couple’s 2-year-old suffered a leg wound as a result of the shootout, police said.
Casillas was released from the Will County jail after posting bail about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Ortiz was released Thursday morning.
Ornelas’ bond has been set at $750,000. He was due in court at 9 a.m. Thursday.
Guerra’s bond also was set at $750,000. He was scheduled to appear in court Friday morning.
It was not clear Thursday what would happen to Casillas’ and Ortiz’s son when he recovered.
