SANDWICH – Firefighters extinguished a fire in a two-story apartment building Monday afternoon at 158 Gletty Road, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies responded about 2:26 p.m. The tenants of the four-unit apartment were not home at the time of the fire, and no one was injured, according to the release. The American Red Cross assisted the tenants when they later arrived at the scene, where the building was a total loss.

Sandwich Community Fire Protection District Chief Jason Pruski reported that a tenant’s cat died in the fire. Firefighters were, however, able to rescue a tenant’s dog from the second story of the structure, Pruski said.

According to Pruski, the fire rekindled about 3 a.m. Tuesday. After the fire department was called in, some firefighters and equipment were diverted from a nearby fire on Cedar Street to Gletty Road. The fire was put out within an hour, with no injuries, Pruski said.

The sheriff’s office and state fire marshal are investigating the cause of the blaze.
