WOODSTOCK – The McHenry County Housing Authority announced that it will accept applications for people who want to be placed on the Section 8 housing voucher waiting list.
Applications will be accepted online only from 8:30 a.m. Feb. 6 to 5 p.m.
Feb. 13. A random lottery will pick 2,000 applicants to be placed on the voucher waiting list, according to a news release.
The authority closed its Section 8 waiting list in 2012 because more than 2,500 people were on the list, and it took upward of five years for someone to receive assistance, according to the authority.
The housing authority has a contract with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to assist 962 elderly and limited-income families through the program, according to its website.
“[The] McHenry County Housing Authority receives limited funding from the U.S. Department HUD and is unable to serve all of the McHenry County households that are in need of rental assistance,” Executive Director Julie Biel Claussen said. “We have a priority preference in our program to assist people that are living and/or working in McHenry County. We are delighted that we are able to accept applications again, even for this short period.”
